I was excited to join some great friends at the local site of the National Writing Project today! Two of my fellow group members from last summer are getting ready to present at a local conference sponsored by our local section of NWP and they gave it a dry run. I am now a coach with my local NWP and will be joining the current fellows on Wednesday for a coaching session to develop the lessons they will be presenting to their group in the coming weeks.
The National Writing Project Facebook Page states: "The National Writing Project focuses the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation's educators on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners." I spent last summer writing and learning about writing at a local university, where the site was based. I worked with teachers across grade levels, from schools of differing populations, and from several counties. We wrote, taught lessons, and researched best-practices in writing.
All-in-all, it was the most amazing professional development I have EVER had and I love getting together with my NWP friends to talk shop. If you have a local site, I would urge you to consider checking into it for next year. You will learn SO much and develop amazing relationships with other professionals as well as develop your own writing skills!
